Public lighting, a gateway for sustainable and smart communities

19/12/2023

Novéa Energies is increasingly involved as an expert in the public lighting sector, and has had the opportunity to speak at several conferences in 2024, including the most recent one organised by the Ragni Group in conjunction with the Salon des Maires et des Collectivités locales in Paris. It was an opportunity for Julien Rapin, Sales Director and co-founder of Novéa Energies, to present the right reflexes to have when it comes to autonomous solar lighting.

The conference began with an overview of the state of public lighting in France, followed by a presentation of the various existing solutions for renovating and reducing the consumption of streetlights in France.

How can public lighting be used to support the ecological transition?

The lighting industry has changed dramatically in just a few years. During the conference, Stéphane Ragni (Managing Partner and Sales Director, RAGNI), Julien Rapin (Sales Director and Co-founder, Novéa Energies) and Thierry Suzanne (Sales Director and Co-founder, SEVe) presented a myriad of options for improving public lighting, including renovation, the installation of autonomous solar-powered light points and the development of connected management solutions.

The key is to ask the right questions when it comes to improving or replacing your lighting: after all, you don’t light a bus stop, a main road or a housing estate in the same way, and each community has its own specific characteristics! The state of the network, installation conditions, respect for biodiversity… are all points to be taken into account when launching the appropriate studies to provide the best possible lighting, whether solar-powered or connected. Lastly, connected solutions can optimise the use and maintenance of lighting points.

And what about practical solutions?

To illustrate the presentation, we were honoured to receive testimonials from Jérôme Viaud, Mayor of Grasse city (France), and Antoine Gilmant, Project Director at Citeos (a French company specialized in the installation of street lighting).

In Grasse, a major operation to renovate and harmonise all the street lighting has been launched. The aim? To be consistent with the nationally-agreed energy transition strategy, while at the same time achieving savings of 65% by applying the points set out above. Jérôme Viaud also took the opportunity to remind local authorities that they need to take a proactive approach to renovating their solar lighting systems, so that they can play a part in bringing about change at their own level.

Antoine Gilmant presented the largest motorway lighting project in Europe based in the North of France, using autonomous solar-powered lampposts. Solar power was chosen because it makes the network more secure by preventing cable theft, and minimises the impact on users during construction work, with reduced installation time.
