EFFICIENT LIGHTING OF CAR PARKS

On a car park, efficient lighting can help pedestrians to navigate and provide a more pleasant car park experience for users. It’s an essential element for the safety and comfort of both drivers and pedestrians. Well-lit cr park reduces the risk of accidents, vehicles damages, and theft.
In this article, we will provide you with some tips for effectively lighting your parking while minimising the impact on biodiversity and improving user safety.

 

What kind of illumination?

  • Light intensity:

The recommended light intensity is 10 to 15 average lux, and 20 lux with disabled acess car park spaces.

  • Uniformity of lighting:

It’s important to ensure a uniform distribution of light throughout the car park to avoid shadowed areas and ensure good visibility. Standards recommend a uniformity level of 0.4.

  • Color temperature:

The color temperature of light can influence visual perception and safety. The recommended color temperature is a maximum of 3,000K for good lighting efficiency. For better integration with biodiversity, a color temperature of 2,200K to 2,700K is perfectly suitable.

 

What program?

It is necessary to adapt the lighting program to the specific usage of the space by illuminating only when necessary. Understanding and adjusting the program based on the typology of the area and the needs of the users is essential to optimise the sizing of lighting solar solutions and limit the use of primary resources during manufacturing.

Example of programming:

Here are two examples of programming. The first one is set to 10% dimming lighting throughout the night and will illuminate at 100% power upon detecting any movement.

The second is put on 10% dimming lighting with 100% presence detection from sunset until 10 PM and from 6 AM until sunrise. During the rest of the night (from 10 PM to 6 AM), the car park has low traffic, so the lighting is turned off. However, if any user is detected during that time, the lighting will operate at 50% capacity.

 

  • Smart options:

The detection can be made communicating with our Novmoov option, which synchronises the lighting activation of a group of lighting solutions to create a moving light trail that follows the user’s movement.

The MULTI solution can also be used to relocate energy production away from the light fixtures in shaded areas.
